The crack has appeared over the past few days and has caused plenty of speculation as to whether the property will fall down on its own or be demolished and repaired

A former estate agents on the corner of Old Street and Oldham Road in Ashton Town centre is giving cause for concern, since it developed a serious crack from the roof stretching down across its gable end.

The condition of the building  which  dates from around 1878 deteriorated quickly over the past few days and has has been cordoned off .

The upper floor overhang, over the shop door entrance has been shored up with scaffolding supporting temporary lintels.

It seems the building will remain a feature of Old Street for some more years to come as the the council has reassured the Reporter that steps are being taken to retain the 100 year-old corner property.

A Tameside Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of this issue and one of our surveyors has been out and met with the owner and their structural engineer to agree some temporary measures to support the building and address safety. The owner is now working with his engineer to repair the building.”
