Two men have been arrested after a police officer was injured in a crash on the M61 near Bolton.

The officer, of Lancashire Constabulary, was involved in the pursuit of a silver Vauxhall Vectra on the motorway southbound, near Rivington Services on Monday afternoon.

Police began to chase the Vectra after it was understood to be involved in a collision with a Bentley, with the police car overturning and striking the central reservation – leaving it severely damaged.

A 35-year-old man, from Ashton-under-Lyne, has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, as well as dangerous driving and drink or drug driving.

Another man, 22, also from Ashton, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Both have been bailed until Tuesday, November 29.

A spokesman for Lancashire Constabulary said: “Our investigation into this incident is continuing and we are trying to trace anyone else who may have been involved.

“We would like to thank our social media followers for all of the well wishes to the officer, who thankfully only received minor injuries and the positive comments we have received.

“We understand that it’s frustrating for drivers when parts of the motorway are closed but we always appreciate your patience whilst we move any damaged vehicles and conduct our investigations.”
