Parents, children, carers and friends alike were celebrating at Carmel Christian Centre in Denton on Saturday as new facilities for disabled children were unveiled.

STARS – which stands for Special Time and Relaxation Sessions – is a voluntary, parent-led group which is run for children who are non-mobile and have complex disabilities.

They’ve been based at the Centre for three years, where they hold sessions that are designed to provide the children with a fun-filled sensory experience and much-needed support and friendship for their parents and carers.

The STARS group have spent the last 18 months raising funds for the facilities with the help of their family and friends, members of the Carmel Christian Centre and Soroptimist International.

Joanne Mellor, one of the parents in the group said: “Saturday saw our dream become a reality with the unveiling of our amazing new facilities.

“The fully adapted changing room/toilet will not only greatly meet the needs of our STARS families but many other people in our community who visit and use this centre.”

Sue Kelly is also a member of STARS and she expressed gratitude to all those who helped fund the vital equipment.

“All our STAR families want to say a great big thank you to everyone who has helped to raise the funds and who worked so hard on making our venue and facilities look so amazing.

“Thank you also to everyone who joined in our celebration on Saturday. We had an awesome time together.”
