A Stalybridge stalwart has been honoured for his work in the community by having a building named after him.

Tom Daly opened 2nd Generation Furnishings in 2012 with his wife Ann and friend Christine Burgess. Since then, Tom, Ann, Christine and their dedicated team of volunteers have taken in unwanted furniture from New Charter properties, refurbished it and provided it to those most in need.

Sadly, Tom has been diagnosed with terminal cancer but on Friday, his friends and family were joined by New Charter staff, local politicians and thankful residents to honour Tom and is impact on the community.

Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds officially unveiled the plaque as Tom proudly watched on. Afterwards, he said it was a privilege to honour Tom. “I remember first hearing about 2nd Generation Furnishings as an idea and thinking it sounded like a great idea for a building that had been here for a while,” he said. “I remember canvassing down this street three months later and already it looked transformed.

“A lot of people have been really helped by this place and it’s a great use of old furniture. It was one of those ideas that benefits all-round. It came around through Tom’s hard-work and inspiration and the difference he’s made is wonderful. What an absolute privilege to be here today.”

New Charter Deputy Chief Executive Tony Powell told the story of how they were struggling to offload the building, previously known as Astral House, on Stamford Drive.

He said: “I’ll be honest, it had been empty for many years and we were struggling to know what to do with it. Tom and Anne and others came to me with an idea and I thought ‘I wonder if they can do something with the building that we couldn’t do?’

“We handed over this building to Tom and this concept of an idea he had back in 2011 and now it is unrecognisable. The brilliant work that Tom, Anne and the team have done down here has had a big impact on the local community. People have really benefitted from it. They’ve done brilliant work and we were just keen to recognise the efforts he’s put in, hence we’re re-naming it the Tom Daly Centre.”

For Tom himself, the day was an emotional one but he was keen that the accolades be shared among those he worked tirelessly alongside to get 2nd Generation Furnishings off the ground and turn it into a successful enterprise.

“It’s overwhelming what’s happened today,” Tom said. “I didn’t expect anything like this. It’s not just for me, this is for all the volunteers and all the hard work they put into it.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve all achieved in here. I love the place, I think about it all the time. I can’t help but think about the people we’ve helped and the stories I’ve heard. It’s been fantast
