Romiley new build development destroyed by fire, arson “likely cause”

Fire crews had to remain on the scene for over 12 hours to ensure the the blaze that wrecked an 11 property development was completely extinguished

Police and fire investigators are working to find the cause of a fire that has destroyed an exclusive new build development on Oakwood Road, Romiley, Stockport .

Firefighters were called to the secluded site at 6.45am on Thursday morning and arrived to find a fire involving timber-framed properties that were under construction.

Six fire engines and other fire service vehicles were required to tackle the fire and protect surrounding buildings.

The fire was brought under control after several hours and crews continued to extinguish it with water, pumped from the nearby Peak Forest canal.

Station Manager Pat Johnson said. “The entire site has been destroyed by fire and once the incident has been dealt with, we will investigate the cause.”

A spokesperson for the fire service said:”Fire Investigation have told us that they believe the cause is likely to be deliberate and are treating the incident as suspicious. Police are also at the scene conducting an investigation.

“There were no electrics in the building or anything obvious that could have started the fire, although the building is so badly damaged it could be a while before this is confirmed.
