Droylsden playscheme, which is supported by the town’s Pubwatch, is gearing up for another busy school holidays.

Sheila Bowater, Landlady at the Bush Inn on Moorside Street, set up the playscheme in the summer of last year after realising that parents had nowhere to take their children during school breaks.

Since then it has gone from strength to strength, with hundreds of children attending and a trip to Gulliver’s World for the families funded by Droylsden Pubwatch.

“We’ve been at the Bush for two and-a-half years,” Sheila said.

“Last year, I started asking parents what they were doing in the summer and it became obvious then that there was nowhere in the community that the parents could take their kids to do activities.

“I’ve got a background of doing playschemes, so I thought we’d give it a go, so we started it last year and we’ve done one in every school holiday.

“This year has been phenomenal; we had 110 kids through the door over the summer.

“There’s always something going on throughout the school holidays and we’re just planning now for half-term, which is Hallowe’en so we’ve got the kids party coming up.”

Grateful parents have had nothing but praise for the playscheme.

Mother-of-four Leanne Carroll said: “Sheila is amazing; what she does is brilliant. The kids love coming here. They’ve been asking, ‘When can we go back to the pub?’

“They’re really looking forward to coming back for the half-term. It also brings the community together. I’ve met a lot of friends through the playscheme.”

The icing on the cake of the summer’s playscheme activities was a trip to Gulliver’s World, completely funded by Droylsden Pub Watch.

“With all the council cutbacks, which can’t be helped, budgets are decreasing and there’s nothing for families in the area,” Sheila said.

“One of the things we did try to do last year was a trip but just the cost for a coach was too expensive for parents.

“As I’m the Secretary, I approached Pubwatch at the July meeting and asked if they would fund a trip for the families.

“We do have some families who have got two, three or four children and just to go to for a day out to the cinema; you’re talking more than £100. Pubwatch agreed to fund a trip for 26 families to Gulliver’s World.

“I want to thank Pubwatch for funding it because without them we wouldn’t have had the trip. It’s been really good and here’s to many more days!”

Alan Graham, Chair of the Droylsden Pubwatch, said the group will continue to support The Bush Kids Playscheme.

“It’s about showing our support for the community,” he said. “The playscheme is a wonderful asset to the Droylsden Community so when Sheila approached us for help, we were more than happy to oblige.”

Attention has now turned to the Hallowe’en party being planned for next week’s half-term break.

Stacey Hunter, whose two children attend the playscheme said: “The kids absolutely love it and I love it because it got us out of the house. We’re really looking forward to Hallowe’en.”
