Two people have been arrested in connection with the Cineworld break in that created massive half term holiday havoc for hundreds of families expecting to enjoy their movie favourites.

The cinema on Ashton Leisure Park, was forced to close after the burglary on Wednesday morning, which was said to have been followed by a vandalism spree that left the place “absolutely trashed”.

The police believe that four male offenders broke in to the 14 screen cinema complex on Fold Way and proceeded to vandalise it, sometime between 3am and 4:40am early Wednesday.

The alleged offenders then left a short time later having caused extensive damage to the property inside.

A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy have now been arrested on suspicion of burglary and have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Following the burglary employees of Cineworld, had to stand outside the movie complex and were forced to turn away dozens of disappointed cinema goers, many with young families, who were looking forward to a half term treat.

Detective Sergeant Ian Toole of GMP’s Tameside borough said: “The offenders involved in this incident caused extensive damage to the inside of the cinema, causing great inconvenience to staff and anyone looking to watch a film there this week.

“I would like to ask anyone with information about this incident to contact police.”
