A war veteran from Hyde got the send-off he deserved after an amazing response to an appeal for mourners to attend his funeral.

Douglas Oswald Shallcross, who served in Normandy in the Second World War, died recently at the age of 94 – and only four or five people were expected to attend the service because he comes from a small family.

But more than 100 people, including many war veterans, turned out at the Highfield Cemetery in Romiley on Tuesday afternoon to pay their last respects.

Douglas, who was born and raised in Marple, survived a grenade blast and was run over by a tank whilst fighting the Germans during his time as a Reconnaissance Corps solider.
