Tesco’s charity champion will soon be on her way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of three charities, having reached her target of £2,000.

Geraldine Barlow will travel from Heathrow Airport to Tanzania via Nairobi on Thursday afternoon ahead of her trek on Saturday, before attempting the summit climb next Thursday (22nd September).

She will then start her descent and spend a full day in the local town of Moshi, before heading back to the UK next Sunday (25th September).

Geraldine, who works at Tesco Glossop, has been fundraising for months and has currently raised £2173.94 for Tesco Charity Partnership, The British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK.

She told the Chronicle: “I am overwhelmed and amazed that I’ve raised so much! I couldn’t have done it without the continued support from family, friends, work colleagues, Tesco customers, my training partners and Glossop Happy Ramblers and Glossop’s Red Ramblers.

“I have been going out for lengthy walks with both groups on a Tuesday and Sunday and what a fantastic, supportive, friendly and amazing group of people they are. My focus now is to reach Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro. I’m so excited about this adventure. I am a little scared about the altitude and a little nervous as I don’t know what to expect.”

Geraldine – who has walked up Kinder Scout and along the Pennine Way to get ready for the climb – has raffled off a luxury hamper and held a bag-packing event in store among other things to raise as much money as possible.

She explained her schedule ahead of trekking 19,300ft up the mountain in east Africa.

The 30-year-old added: “I will leave from Manchester on Thursday at 12:15 and arrive at Heathrow at 13:15. I pick up my Kilimanjaro plane at 18:25 which goes to Nairobi, then change to a smaller plane and head for Kilimanjaro airport.

“I arrive at 8am local time (Tanzania are two hours ahead of the UK) and then meet my guide and transfer to the hotel.

“I will have supper with my guide as well as being briefed on the journey ahead of us!”
