A huge fight between two rival groups of up to 40 people, has resulted in several of them being taken to hospital, including at least one man with serious head injuries.

According to witnesses a fight broke out between two groups in Kokos nightclub in Stalybridge in the early hours of Saturday morning.

One of the two groups was believed to be from Hattersley and another from the Newton area of Hyde.

The disturbance was said to have involved both men and women and once the fight took hold inside the club, innocent bystanders were forced to run for cover.

Security staff tried to intervene and apparently managed to force most of the gang members outside, where fighting continued out onto Melbourne Street.

One witness recounted several people being left unconscious with people stepping on them to continue fighting.

One man received serious injuries to his head and was taken to Hope Hospital in Salford. His condition is unknown.

Several other people were taken to hospital with less serious injuries.

Police are said to be investigating.
