Police have launched an investigation after a car was damaged in a targeted arson attack in Ashton-under-Lyne in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Two people approached a house on Burlington Street and placed a plastic bottle filled with petrol next to the vehicle before setting it alight, shortly after 2am on Tuesday, September 6.

It is believed they then fled down Mowbray Street.

Officers believe this is a targeted attack but have reassured residents that there are additional officers on duty to ensure the area is safe.

Detective Inspector Chris Simpson, of GMP’s Tameside Borough, said: “People living in the area will be, understandably, concerned about what happened and I want to offer my reassurance that we have extra patrols in the area.

“We believe this was a targeted attack and are urging anyone who knows who is responsible or saw someone behaving suspiciously at the time of the incident to contact police.”

Anyone with information relating to the incident is urged to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 155 of 06/09/16, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
