Five masked men armed with a crowbar and an axe have subjected a couple to a violent ordeal as four of the mob forced their way into a house on Mountbatten Avenue in Dukinfield.

A man and a woman were subjected to threats and violence as the four demanded money, with one of the robbers grabbing the woman around the neck and throwing her to the floor.

The gang rejoined the fifth robber waiting outside, dragging the male victim with them and began ransacking a white trade transit type van, throwing items across the garden drive.

During the course of their search of the van one member of the gang subjected the house-holder to repeated assaults hitting the man around the head chest and shoulders with the crowbar.

After virtually emptying the van of its contents scattering items across the drive, the gang fled, but not before at least three of them made one final assault on the male victim hitting and kicking him as he lay in the doorway of his home.
