GLOSSOP North End will be hoping their latest signing will prove to be a big hit after securing the services of defender Mohamud Ali.

The right-back joins the Surrey Street side from fellow Evo-Stik First Division North outfit Northwich Victoria, where he has played for a number of years.

Ali – whose name is an uncanny resemblance to the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who died last month aged 74 – did not feature in the two play-off games between Glossop and Northwich at the end of last term.

But he was part of the Vics side knocked out by the Hillmen on penalties in the FA Cup in 2014-15 after a replay and by League Two champions Northampton Town in the second round proper last season.

Welcoming Ali to the club, a statement on the GNE website added: “It’s that kind of experience that has seen manager Chris Willcock determined to secure Mo’s services, and we are chuffed to bits to see him in blue this season.”

He becomes Glossop’s fourth summer signing following the arrivals of goalkeepers Ben Chapman and Joe Parker, and striker Mike Norton.
