Droylsden Cricket Club were crowned winners of the second annual Under 9’s cricket festival held at Droylsden Cricket Club yesterday.

Six teams competed at Oakfield in a competition supported by the Greater Manchester Cricket League.

Denton CC, Dukinfield CC, Greenmount CC and Stand CC joined 2 teams from Droylsden CC in competing for the trophy.

After the group stages had been completed, Droylsden (B) played Denton in the 5th place play off, with Denton winning a close game by just 3 runs.

Stand defeated Dukinfield in the 3rd place play off, and Droylsden (A) and Greenmount, the only 2 undefeated teams contested the final.

Droylsden batted first and had only scored 1 run after the first pair.
The next pair, which included player of the final Alfie Curran, scored 37 in the next 3 overs without losing a wicket, and the last Droylsden pair scored 26 to take the score to 264.

Greenmount started in almost identical fashion to Droylsden and scored just 4 runs from the first 3 overs.

The next pair scored more readily and increased the total to 26. Some fantastic bowling to the last pair restricted the visitors to just 16 runs in the last 3 overs, giving Droylsden victory by 22 runs.

Visiting Greenmount coach Nigel Franklin nominated Droylsden captain Joe Schofield as the Player of the Tournament.

Rob Tipping, Droylsden Cricket Club said: “We would like to thank all the players, parents and coaches from all the clubs who made the day a success. There was some fantastic cricket played and all the players behaved impeccably throughout the day.”
