A church service with a difference took place at St Peter’s Church in Ashton on Sunday.

Cats, dogs, rabbits and even a Chinese Hamster were just some of the creatures, along with all of their owners, gathered at the grade II* listed building to worship and give thanks for all of the world’s animals.

The annual event takes place every July, and is now in its 48th year.

It has always proved a big hit with the congregation, who turn out in force with their pets for an unusual and different day of worship.

Hymns were sung, prayers were said and there was also a special sermon on what having a pet means.

Blessings of pets and their owners were then given out, where it was announced: “That we may be good to our pets always, so that they may be happy also.”
