Police are appealing for information after an armed robbery at a bookmakers in Ashton.

Two men armed with hammers entered Betfred at The Arcades on Warrington Street just after 8pm on Friday.

They approached a member of staff and started banging on the desk with one of the hammers and demanded money.

The staff member handed the pair cash from the till and safe and the raiders fled from the scene.

The first man was wearing black tracksuit bottoms, a black hooded jacket with blue stripes on the sleeves and carrying a black bag with a large union jack on.

The second man was described as wearing dark coloured jeans, a black hood, white rimmed sunglasses, black trainers and black gloves.

Detective Constable Richard McIvor of GMP’s Tameside borough, said: “This robbery took place when the shop was busy and was obviously very distressing for staff and customers inside at the time.

“Such a serious offence should not be able to take place without those involved being held accountable and we would like to appeal to the public for their help.

“If you have seen this robbery take place or have any information that can help us with our investigation then please contact police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
