Audenshaw School’s 1st XI cricket team made history by winning the Lancashire Cup for the first time last week at Haslingden CC.

After overcoming Merchant Taylor’s in the semi-final, Audenshaw met AKS Lytham in the final, a repeat of last year’s Plate final which Audenshaw won.

Having won the toss and electing to bat, star man and Derbyshire U17 representative Matt Sonczak was in terrific form, scoring boundaries freely from the off and upsetting one particular local resident by striking the ball onto the roof of her house and then narrowly missing her car window with another huge hit.

Dan Moriarty provided good stability as the opening stand got past 50 before he was caught behind after seven overs.

First XI captain Harry Welsby arrived at the crease. AKS Lytham bowled and fielded well in the middle part of the innings as runs dried up having restricted Audenshaw to scoring just 22 runs off the next 6 overs, leaving the score at 73/1 after 12 overs.

Both Sonczak and Welsby overcame this difficult period in the innings as boundaries began to flow once again.

Sonczak brought up his half century in style from just 45 balls and the big-hitting Welsby began to find the middle of his bat as both boys went about dismantling the AKS Lytham attack.

Sonczak eventually fell for a magnificent 72 and Welsby finished on 49* after being joined by wicket keeper Wood who finished on 12*.

The Audenshaw innings closed on 151/2 from their allotted 20 overs, a score that would be very difficult to reach if the bowling and fielding continued in the same vein it had all season.

Audenshaw didn’t disappoint after the interval.

Matt Sonczak’s accurate spin bowling combined with the disciplined line and length of year 10 seamer Lewis Cooper gave Audenshaw the perfect start as wickets fell at regular intervals leaving AKS Lytham reeling on 20/5 after 8 overs.

Audenshaw were also very impressive in the field with two early run-outs and also two catches from year 9 student Luke Gilmore.

Cooper was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with impressive figures of 3-12 off his 4 overs.

AKS Lytham finished on 86/7, 65 runs short of the first innings total to leave Audenshaw as 2016 Lancashire Cup Winners.
