Glossop Ladies FC celebrate historic success
Thursday 9th June 2016 @ 11:27 by Adam Higgins

Glossop North End Ladies FC have more than one reason to celebrate after securing a historic first league and cup double.

The team finished top of the Derbyshire Girls & Ladies League First Division after a 2-0 victory over LFC Buxton in their final game of the season – and only lost once all year!

They made up for their defeat in the final of the cup last season by beating Nottingham-based Castle Donington 4-1 to lift the Derbyshire League Cup in Matlock.

The team started as they meant to go on by beating Mackworth St Francis Ladies 2-0 in the Challenge Shield trophy at the beginning of the season.

Glossop Ladies first established in 1998 but this is the most successful campaign in their history and the first time they have won trophies. However, they don’t intend to stop there.

Coaches Zoey Shaw and Leanne Pace are thrilled with the team’s achievements and hope it can be the start of something special for their young team.

Zoey – who has also played for Tameside, Stockport and Everton – told the Chronicle: “Next year we’re looking to retain the title and cup but we’re staying in the Derbyshire league to help the Under 16s coming through as moving to the Manchester league would be a massive step and mean a lot more travelling.

“We’re hoping a lot of Under 16s choose to come to us because we’ve established ourselves as a feeder team for the Under 18s.

“We’ve spoken to the Under 16s manager and we’re building a foundation for a young team to compete at a higher level.

“Me and Leanne split coaching and playing. She started the season on the right wing but plays more in central midfield. She’s got more years left in her playing wise than I have so I tend to stick to coaching more. It’s like good cop, bad cop with us.”

The team, who train on Wednesday nights, play on Sunday afternoons throughout the season at Glossop’s Surrey Street ground.
