Ashton 90-6 Uppermill 89 ao

Ashton put their desperately disappointing Wood Cup exit behind them as the first ever competitive game against Uppermill ended in a 5 point return for the Reyner Lane side.

Whilst the eventual outcome was perhaps closer than skipper Jack Newman would have wanted, the improvement in attitude, application and desire was there for all to see.

Two early wickets for Ryan Heap, who finished with 2-13 off 10 overs, put Ashton onto the front foot, against an Uppermill side who had posted nigh on 400 the previous week.

Heap’s spell, unquestionably his best for a long time, was complemented by a wicketless but effective performance from Subhair Khan.

The visitors fought back as Taylor and Baron took the score to 60.

At that point the game changed with the introduction of Chami Edirisinghe and Brad Woolley.

Both bowled a loose opening over but thereafter Uppermill simply had no answer to the Ashton spin twins.

In the space of 10 overs, 8 wickets fell for 29.

Paid man Edirisinghe ended up with 2-16, and Woolley 6-23.

The last 5 wickets fell in 15 balls. It was a great performance by the pair, aided by excellent work in the field.

The question at the break was which of the two Ashton performances from last weekend would be replicated.

Would it be the side which scored nearly 300 at Micklehurst or the spineless display which struggled to 44 against Middleton.

Before the game Newman had stressed the need for better application, and Richard Taylor, (25) gave Ashton an effective start. But it was Newman himself, leading not only from the front but showing the right example who got Ashton over the line.

His unbeaten 37 was a real skipper’s knock, and left the Reyner Lane team with 2 wins from the opening 3 games.

Saturday’s encounter with Milnrow will be a real challenge, coming up against prolific South African pro, Rudi Second, but with the same application Ashton can travel to Ladyhouse with confidence.
