TWO fitness fanatics from Tameside have won gold in a taekwondo championship in Spain.

Gary Kay, 23, and Millie Dooley, 8, both from Droylsden, secured gold medals in the Barcelona Open and came second in the team event.

The Manchester Sport Taekwondo School, which Gary and Millie are part of, also came first overall in the eighth England Open earlier this month.

Coach Daley Richardson, 31, told Reporter Sport: “I’m over the moon and very proud, I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better.

“We won a massive team trophy and received 19 gold medals from the England Open as well so it’s a fantastic achievement.

“I’m immensely proud of all of my students. The club helps people with weight loss and fitness and get interested in sport generally so it’s been a huge success.”

The club, which first opened in March 2015, attracts between 25 and 30 people every week, from the age of four and above.

The classes run on Tuesday nights from 7-8pm at St Martins Church Hall in Droylsden but Daley, the son of former bronze medallist and national coach Mark Richardson, is looking at new bigger premises in Denton and Ashton in the hope of expanding the school.

“We’re always looking out to recruit new students and urge anyone of any ability who is interested to join,” he added.
