Simmondley Primary Schoolboy James McGraw is proving he can swim and run with the best of his age group across the North West after winning a silver medal at the Warrington Aquathlon.

Around 125 of the region’s top under 16 triathletes congregated at Edge Hill University.

In very windy and cold conditions James, aged ten, achieved his best ever finish coming second in his age group.

It involved swimming 150 metres in a swimming pool and then running a gruelling 1,200 metres around a grass track.

James, who is in his third season of competing, finished in a creditable eight minutes 49 seconds.

The Warrington aquathlon is one of a series of events across the summer as part of the North West Junior Series.

James is not involved with a triathlon club but is a member of Glossop swimming and cycling.

Dad Duncan McGraw said: “The weather conditions at the event were terrible, but living in Glossop James is used to battling the elements in training.

“When some of the other competitors began to wave the white towel, James just put his head down and soldiered on to achieve a great result.

“James is looking forward to competing in a few more triathlons this summer and if he finishes six events he will gain a certificate of achievement from Triathlon England.”
