A Longdendale community hero has received the BEM bestowed on him in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours.

Peter Fish was handed his medal by Greater Manchester Lord Lieutenant Warren J. Smith in a glittering ceremony at Manchester Town Hall.

Paying tribute to the 10 people receiving the British Empire Medal, Mr Smith said: “It is with personal pride and delight that I welcome the recipients and their friends.

“Pride, because every citizen of this nation should be proud to celebrate the enormous contribution made by each of those who are to receive this award.”

Peter, 85, from Hollingworth, received the award for services to elderly people in Hollingworth and Glossop.

Mr Smith said: “In many ways each of these people demonstrates the wonderful variety of volunteering opportunities that exist in our county and the personal commitment made to sections of the community that makes a difference to the lives of others.”
