A local gymnast is celebrating after making it onto the England Gymnastics Squad.

Thirteen-year-old Eleanor Green trains with Tameside School of Gymnastics at Active Ken Ward in Hattersley.

She was placed 14th overall at the English Championship in Loughborough to earn her spot on the squad.

Coach Cerys Allen said: “She has been capable of making it in the past, but she gets so nervous when she competes so this year as well as working on her gymnastics we have been working on her confidence and it has really paid off.”

Her place in the England squad was announced just after she competed in the Junior British Championship in April which was streamed on the BBC.

Eleanor, who trains 20 hours a week over six days, said: “My coach Cerys did say I had a chance if I hit all my routines in the English, but afterwards it kind of went to the back of my mind.

“Then my mum answered the phone one day and shouted really loudly and as soon as she said it was Cerys I guessed.”

Eleanor and Cerys will now attend five different training weekends with the squad and national coaches in Aldershot. After this there will be a trial and if she places she will be chosen to compete for England.

Cerys continued: “She is very excited, I’ve never seen her this excited about something – it’s like she finally believes in herself.

“She works really hard and even had to come back from a few injuries to get here and it has paid off.”

Eleanor added: “I’m really excited, I didn’t think I’d make it and it’s been a big confidence boost.

“Cerys is really good and has helped me and my friends and family are all really proud.”
