By Tom Stenson:

The first team hosted Thornham on Saturday on a gloriously sunny day down at Egerton Street.

The opposition skipper won the toss and elected to bat, on what looked a good wicket. However Denton made the best of the early conditions, with Ahamed picking up where he left off from last weeks 5-for with 2 early wickets to leave Thornham 13-2.

Walker and Baird steadied the ship, before the introduction of Buitendag into the attack accounted for Walker with the score on 45. Wickets then fell at regular intervals, but Baird continued to look impressive and kept the score moving.

Pannett’s quick yorkers were the undoing of the tail, with Baird the last man to go, with Thornham setting Denton 143 to win from 56 overs. Pannett finished with an impressive 5-41 from 12 overs.

In reply, Denton got off to a flyer. Taylor started in his usual aggressive manner, and when he fell for 15 in the 5th over, all this did was to bring overseas Buitendag to the crease, who proceeded to take the game away from Thornham.

He raced to a 28 ball 50, ably supported by the patient Halpin at the other end, who ended up out unluckily with the score on 84 when he was run out backing up, a Buitendag drive clipping the bowlers fingertips. Wickets started to fall in a hurry in the middle order and when Buitendag was out for 75 and the team needing 39 to win, nerves set in.

However captain Hawley steadied the ship, and that left 7th wicket pair Clayton and Leech to guide the team home by 4 wickets, as was last week.

On Sunday, the 1st team hosted Woodhouses in the first round of the cup and were beaten by the much better team on the day.

50s for Trenoweth and Ali for the visitors powered them to a formidable 278-9, and when Ali and Butler opened up and dominated the home batsman with their spin, they sealed a 230 run win.
