Tameside’s twitchers were given a treat on Monday as a bird not spotted in this part of the world since the 1980s was seen on Audenshaw Reservoirs.

The Kentish Plover is a small wader bird more commonly found in coastal areas in Southern Europe and the Americas.

When word spread of a sighting in Audenshaw, dozens of bird-watchers and nature lovers flocked to catch a glimpse.

Stephanie Leese, who took the accompanying photo, travelled from Hartford in Cheshire. She said: “The Kentish Plover is a bird more commonly found in Europe, it’s a very rare visitor to Britain.

“It’s even more unusual to spot one in the North West and especially in an inland area. It’s caused quite a stir in the birding community!”
