High Peak Junior Football League is looking for teams
Thursday 28th April 2016 @ 12:10 by Adam Higgins

A new High Peak Junior Football League will be in operation from the start of the 2016-17 season.

The league is initially for Under 7s, Under 8s and Under 9s teams to play on the Hadfield 3G astro turf on Sunday mornings – something any other league in the area can’t offer.

There are vacancies still available but they are filling fast ahead of its eagerly-awaited launch in September.

The idea to set it up came just before Christmas with the High Peak Football Development Group before a committee was formed in the New Year.

Jill Crossland, secretary of Tintwistle Athletic, who will chair the new High Peak JFL, said: “I look after mini-soccer teams at Tintwistle and there are no leagues that operate on a Sunday.

“Everything is Saturday mornings, so we had a problem with teams that only wanted to play on Sunday mornings, which was absolutely impossible.

“Teams also currently have to travel down to Ashton which five and six year olds don’t like doing, they’d rather play closer to home.

“We are hoping the prices will be reasonable, it’s on the doorstep, teams don’t have to travel into Tameside and its local clubs playing each other.”

Jon Matthews, Glossop Juniors Under 7s coach, who is vice chair and treasurer of the new league, said: “It’s been a short journey so far but I think we all realise the commitment we’ve made to make this work. For all the kids it’ll be fantastic to see a league based locally.

“There’s been a lot of organisation and meetings over the last six months but we realise there’s still a lot of work to do to ensure this not only takes off but is successful.”

Tammy Snape, coach of Tintwistle Athletic’s Under 8s and Under 11s, who will be the league’s secretary, added: “We want it to be about our children coming somewhere local, getting together taking part in sport and it’s going to be a real community feeling for all our children.”

Teams interested in taking part can e-mail [email protected], visit the High Peak JFL Facebook and Twitter accounts, or contact Jill, Jon or Tammy directly for more information.
