After 22 years of consistent performances in the Lancashire County League, Glossop CC begin life this season in the newly-formed Greater Manchester Cricket League.

The first team have been allocated a place in the premier division and will meet up with old friends Prestwich, Denton West and DSL as well as new clubs like Bury, Egerton, Clifton and Heywood, where they play their first match on April 16th.

The team will be led once again by skipper Will Hargreaves, supported by last year’s league leading batsman Dale Pennington and South African pro Gionne Koopman, left-hand bat and leg-break bowler, a member of the Border provincial side and part of the SA senior academy with appearances for the national A team.

Gionne will be available for one-to-one coaching and will run the club’s summer school in August (he has the relevant qualifications). The rest of the team will be a blend of experience and young promise, eager to meet the challenges of the new league.

They play their first round LKO cup game at Garstang on Sunday May 22nd.

Damian Eyre continues as senior coach with responsibility for the club Academy.

The other two senior sides will play in the new league on Saturdays (2nd XI) and Sundays (3rd XI) from April to September, with the usual junior matches in midweek and Sunday mornings. Admission to these games is free of charge and the bar will be open each time.

The popular Friday evening coaching sessions for youngsters aged 5-11 will start on April 29th.

Young cricketers will be invited to become club members for a fee of £20 and be awarded a club cap to be worn at all sessions, when they will receive quality coaching from senior players, including our SA pro, and club coaches.

They will have the chance to progress to the 6 junior teams and eventually, like Will & Dale, to the senior teams.

Furthermore the town’s biggest beer garden will be open on Friday evenings for parents and family, including regular hot food on sale.

There is the customary selection of county games to be hosted at North Road.

On Tuesday May 24th there will be a T20 day (two matches am & pm) between Derbyshire & Lancashire 2nd XIs.

Other matches include an Academy U18s boys 2-day game between these same two counties in August, and three girls’/women’s games later in the summer (two including Glossop CC players).

Full home fixtures can be found in the members’ club handbook and on the club web-site – glossopcbc.co.uk.

We look forward to seeing you on the ground beneath the blue skies and warm sunshine of a typical Glossop summer.
