Dukinfield’s pensioners have once again enjoyed a Christmas party thanks to their local councillors.

As usual, The Astley Arms pub was the venue for the festive fun hosted by Cllrs Jackie Lane, Brian Wild and John Taylor.

Jackie’s husband and Denton councillor Dawson Lane were also on hand to help out.

Braving the awful weather to get there, the 50 guests enjoyed a Christmas dinner that received numerous compliments and warm apple crumble and custard for dessert.

Prizes were handed out for the bingo and raffle winners and even Santa Claus paid a visit to hand out small gifts to everyone in attendance.

Entertainment was provided by the Lyndhusrt Primary School Young Voices’ Choir as they beautifully sang Christmas favourites such as Away in A Manger, Silent Night and Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone.

One of the guests, Irene Jeffs who is a regular at the pensioner parties, said: “I love the parties, I put my name down for them all. Everything has been great, from the bingo to the school choir and especially the meal, which was excellent.”

Her friend Eunice Ashmore joined in with the praise saying: “It’s been great. I don’t often go out but I’ll definitely be coming back to these parties.”

Reflecting upon a job well done, Cllr Brian Wild said: “It’s been a fantastic day. The turn-out has been great despite the weather and everybody has had a brilliant time. The meal was superb and we have to thank all the staff here at the Astley Arms for their help and support.

“We’ve had bingo and a visit from Santa too. A big thank you should go to the choir from Lyndurst for coming despite the pouring rain and entertaining us all. They were fabulous.”

The councillor highlighted the importance of the pensioner parties, which the Dukinfield councillors stage once a quarter.

He said: “It’s vital we keep doing these parties because some of these elderly people don’t get out a lot, so they look forward to coming here, having a lovely meal and enjoying the company of their friends.”

The next pensioner party will be in March – watch this space for full details in the New Year. To register your interest, call Cllr Jackie Lane on 0161 339 1265.
