The 2015 Greater Manchester Sports Awards will take place at The Point, Old Trafford Cricket Ground, on Friday 20th November.

The awards will see the local winners from across all 10 local authorities come together with a chance of becoming Greater Manchester winner.

Former Great Britain Gymnast Olympian Beth Tweddle will be the guest speaker on the night and share her experiences and inspirational stories whilst congratulating the nominees and winners on their ongoing achievements.

Chief Executive Yvonne Harrison commented: “Here at GreaterSport we are really excited for 2015’s Greater Manchester Sports Awards.

“It is such a rewarding evening, celebrating the achievements and sporting successes of the past twelve months across the ten districts, highlighting the very best of community sport and the impact this has to help us change lives.”

Below is a full list of nominees who will be representing Tameside:

COACH OF THE YEAR – Wayne Heywood

Wayne has been part of the Ashton Albion Boxing Club for 2 years. His dedication has never faltered and this year he has coached 15 competitive boxers, including a boxer who went on to represent England and became the North West Champion.

He encourages young people to not only excel in the boxing ring but at home and school too and is now encouraging more women to try out the sport.

CLUB OF THE YEAR – Tameside School of Gymnastics

A Gym Mark and British Gymnastics accredited Club, they have a strong link to the Active Tameside Gymnastics programme improving facilities, mentoring coaches and developing a scheme of work for recreational gymnasts.

In the last year one of their gymnasts qualified for the British Championships, five have competed at national level and the club have had more gymnasts than ever before working on the national elite programme.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR – Steve Shilley

He has volunteered at the Ashton-Under-Lyne Swimming Club for over 40 years, starting out as a young swimmer, and is now Chairman.

He is the club’s Community Champion, teaches swimming and attends weekly training sessions to maintain his Lifeguard qualification.

He does lots for charity and there are many young people who have left with improved skills as well as an understanding and want to contribute to the wider community.

UNSUNG HERO OF THE YEAR – Donal Townson

Donal has many strings to his bow including being a leading figure in the Catholic Schools Sports Association, Secretary of the Tameside School Football Association and a forerunner for competitions entered throughout Tameside.

He has spent 40 years fostering sport in Tameside in schools across the borough and is described as a very modest man who is a little shy to admit the impact his hard work has played in helping many young people in achieving their sporting potential.

SPORTS ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR – Anthony Harding

Anthony started out the diving season with a knee injury.

Despite this he has still managed to accumulate 5 medals competing for Team GB in Springboard and Platform Diving.

He trains 6 days a week travelling over 30 miles to Leeds leaving school at lunchtime to ensure he can fit three hours of training in each day.

DISABLED SPORTS ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR – Anya Wough

Anya is a member of the Stockport Harriers and competes in wheelchair racing for which she is the fastest under 11 in Europe.

In the Senior level she is ranked as 8th in the country. Her dream is to reach the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

This year she has gone from training twice a week to four times and was the only one back on the track on Boxing Day!

CHANGING LIFESTYLE RECOGNITION AWARD – Suzanne Fuller

Suzanne is a fitness convert after losing an incredible 22kg in just four months.

In February she decided to give exercise a go starting with a few light classes.

Now she cycles to all of her fitness sessions at Active Oxford Park, has gone down three dress sizes and never felt fitter.
