A Glossop born youngster has been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Junior Padel Tournament in Mexico next month.

14-year-old Lawrence Morgan is one of 24 players that have been recruited to play at the highly regarded tournament.

Taking place from the 16th-22nd November, the six day competition will provide three age groups with an opportunity to make their mark on North American soil.

An Under 14’s, Under 16’s and under 18’s side will be competing at the games, with Lawrence falling into the former category.

While padel remains largely undiscovered as a sport in England, participation rates are soaring in Spain.

Invented in Acapulco, Mexico, by Enrique Corcuera in 1969, padel is currently most popular in Hispanic American countries such as Argentina and Mexico.

Having lived in Spain for the past 12 years, Lawrence – who is bilingual and attends St Georges British international school, Malaga – has been fully exposed to the sport’s popularity.

Boasting a community of 725 students – ranging from 3-18 years old – the school has provided a platform for Lawrence to showcase his skills.

Equipped with seven years of experience in the sport, Lawrence was invited to trials over summer and found his endeavour’s rewarded with a place in the under 14’s Great Britain team.

Ellen Hickson was delighted in her grandson’s achievements and heaped praise on his success. She told Chronicle Sport: “I couldn’t be any more proud of Lawrence and I believe his selection to represent Great Britain is just reward for his efforts over the years.”

Questioned on how he has adapted to life in Spain, Ellen, who has resided in Glossop since 1965, stated: “He lives in Nerja, which is situated on Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast, and seems to love the way of life over there.

“He trains frequently in Spain and often plays against adults, but the age difference doesn’t seem to make a difference really and he’s showing what a talent he is.”
