Manchester Road in Mossley was closed last Friday as garages went up in flames.

Firefighters were called to tackle the fire at Rusty’s Garage, close to The Moorings Pub, with a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire Service saying they discovered acetylene cylinders at the scene, leading to the immediate road closure.

Manchester Road was shut towards Greenfield at the junction of Stamford Street for safety reasons.

The fire, believed to have been caused by an acetylene cylinder, had started in a workshop just after 4pm.

Firefighters used water jets to extinguish the flames and cool the cylinders and no one was hurt in the incident.

The road was only temporarily closed although the fire caused significant traffic delays and firefighters remained for many hours to ensure the scene was safe.
