A long-serving playgroup leader has been honoured by the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Cllr Vincent Ricci.

The group, which was attached to Hope Church, Denton, opened in 1969, although it has recently closed.

Kathleen Jones was involved for the entire 46-year period and in recognition of her efforts she was presented with a certificate and a bouquet of flowers.

Mrs Jones received her gifts in the Mayor’s Parlour at Dukinfield Town Hall where she was joined by her fellow volunteers.

The Mayor said: “Kathleen has shown incredible dedication to the playgroup and I’m sure there are many people in Denton who have benefited from her efforts and those of her colleagues.

“It’s a pity the group has had to close but numbers have dwindled and none of the volunteers are
getting any younger.

“As a Denton councillor I appreciate their efforts, as do my colleagues. I was glad they were able to come to the parlour.”
