Thousands braved wet and windy weather as this year’s Whit Friday Brass Band contest struck up another winning tune in Tameside –  and a record breaker.

For while the annual tradition regularly attracts bands from across the country and Europe, it is believed to be the very first time a band from Australia has taken part in the Tameside element of the contest, although bands from Australia have taken part in Saddleworth before.

The City of Traralgon Band, based near Melbourne, had certainly travelled the furthest to take part in the famous event, dubbed the ‘Greatest Free Show on Earth.’

The band came to take part in the Whit Friday contest after being inspired by the film ‘Brassed Off’.
