whit walks

Good crowds came out in support of this year’s Whit Walks in Hyde, Dukinfield and Stalybridge. See this week’s Tameside Reporter for pictures and reports.

Tomorrow (Friday, May 29), it’s time to strike up the band as the annual Whit Friday Brass Band Contest marches into Tameside and Saddleworth.

The tradition dates back to the late 19th century and this year the borough is hosting 11 events, all organised by volunteer committees under the direction of the Tameside Friends of Whit Friday.

Around 90 bands from across the country are expected to compete, travelling to visit and perform at locations via coach.

To have a chance of being crowned champions, bands have to perform at a minimum of six of the locations.

As well as demanding proof of musical prowess the evening also tests discipline, stamina and organisational skills, as well as offering great free musical entertainment for the public.

Cllr Jackie Lane, Tameside Council’s assistant executive member for culture, said: “The Whit Friday band contests are one of the things that give Tameside its individuality.

“They comprise a unique cultural spectacle which is well worth visiting whether you live in the borough or are just visiting the area.”

Tune into Tameside Radio 103.6FM for live broadcasts from Broadoak in Ashton throughout the contest as we meet the participants, judges and public.
