The historic Tour of Tameside returns to the region after more than a decade this June.

The three day running challenge takes place from Friday, June 19 to Sunday, June 21 with participants covering the 26 miles of a marathon distance over three events which will take the form of a six mile fell race on the Friday, a half marathon on the Saturday and a seven mile road race on the Sunday.

The iconic Tour of Tameside running event was created in the 1980s by legendary British Marathon runner Dr Ron Hill MBE and it became world famous, attracting top runners from all over the UK and across the globe.

This week we turn back the clock on the run which regularly made the pages of the Tameside Reporter in years gone by – just turn to this week’s Tameside Reporter.

Meanwhil, organisers are looking for volunteers to be a part of the iconic race to help out at all three venues across the three days in Stalybridge,
Padfield and Hyde.

You can be involved for just one of the days or for all three.

Volunteer activities will include the following:

• Distributing goody bags on completion of each race.

• Helping with the event set up.

• Acting as course marshals.

• Manning water stations along the course.

• Assisting with course registration.

• Helping with the security of runners’ baggage.

• Car parking duties.

Organisers are appealing for a variety of volunteers that are able to communicate clearly with others, are sociable and able to work alone or as part of a team, be reliable and have fun by getting involved in the local community.

If you would like to help please contact Peter Bird at Sports Tours International on (0161) 703 5806 or email [email protected] for further information regarding volunteering opportunities.
