Well Dressing

It’s Well Dressing time again and once again the wells in Gee Cross will be dressed on Sunday 13th July.

Records show that well dressings were held regularly in Gee Cross from the 1820’s until 1878. When it was the millennium the Gee Cross W.I. wanted to do something special to commemorate the occasion and after much discussion it was decided to revive the old tradition – after all there are many wells in Gee Cross and many springs hence ‘Spring Avenue.’

Preparations have been underway for a couple of weeks now for the annual well dressing which is done in the traditional way.

This is done in Hyde Chapel. Clay has to be put into a large frame, a large drawing transferred onto the clay, then the petalling begins. the whole picture is coloured by filling in the outline with different coloured petals.

This takes three days to complete then the service of thanksgiving takes place on Sunday afternoon starting at the Grapes Hotel. Six wells will be blessed . these are done by other organisations in Gee Cross.

Why not join us especially if you haven’t been before?

There is tea and cakes in the chapel schoolroom afterwards and all the singing is accompanied by Adamson’s band. Not to be missed!
