HORRIFIC: Seventy-nine-year-old attack victim Joan was badly beaten. Her shocked daughter Karen, posted this picture on Facebook in an appeal to catch the offenders.

A shocked daughter is appealing for anyone who knows who left her elderly mother battered and traumatised to help catch her attackers.

Karen Priestley’s 79-year-old mum Joan was repeatedly punched in the head by a gang of four thugs who continued the cowardly attack in broad daylight even when she had fallen to her knees.

The terrible attack happened just days into the New Year after Joan had visited the Mancunian Way Tesco, in Haughton Green, at around 11am and was making her way home.

But she was left so traumatised by the ordeal that she locked herself away at home for almost a week telling no one – not even the police – because she feared her attackers would find her.

Karen spoke out this week stating: “It’s been horrendous for her, she’s a fiercely independent woman.

“She’s lived on her own for so long since my dad died and for this to happen yards from her house is horrendous.”

Karen first found out what had happened when she visited her mum on the fifth day after the attack.

When she saw the horrific bruises she posted a picture of her mum on Facebook, appealing for help in catching her attackers.

She wrote online of her shock that an attack such as this could happen in broad daylight, leading to nearly 1,800 other people sharing the picture in a bid to catch her attackers.

The muggers rifled through Joan’s pockets but took nothing.

Police officers at Hyde also saw the Facebook post and promptly got in touch with Karen.

Detective Inspector Richard Ennis, from Tameside Police, said: “I want to appeal directly to the offenders and their families – please look at the picture and imagine it’s your own grandma or mum. You wouldn’t want your loved ones to end up like this.

“Horrific, unprovoked attacks like this are rare in Haughton Green and I want to reassure residents that we are doing everything in our power to catch the offenders.”

The ringleader of the group was ‘possibly mixed race with a lighter coloured face’, 5ft 11in tall, in his mid 20s, with short black cropped hair and a slim build. The others were white and in their early teens.

Anyone with information is asked to call Hyde Police Station on (0161) 856 9484 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
