‘I LOVE MY FOOTBALL’: Kath Field who has made the top ten shortlist in the Evo-Stik NPL Supporter of the Year Award

A lifelong Mossley AFC fan has spoken of her excitement and pride at being shortlisted as one the Evo-Stik Premier Leagues number one supporters.

With the league’s fans widely hailed as the most passionate and community orientated in Non-League football, title sponsors Evo-Stik have teamed up with the NPL to sponsor this new Evo-Stik NPL Supporter of the Year Award.

Kathleen Field, 81, is one such potential recipient after she was nominated as one of the final ten by Mossley AFC for watching the club for over 70 years.

She told the Reporter: “It’s an honour to be thought of so highly by all my friends at the club, which has been a massive part of my life.”

The avid fan was also recognised by her further affiliation with the club as her late husband Brian was a long term volunteer and committee member.

Continuing the family tradition is Kath’s daughter Elaine who is currently the clubs match day secretary and committee member.

Together Kath and Elaine travel home and away watching the Lilywhites in all weathers and for her 80th birthday last year, Kath became one of the oldest mascots around as she led the team out.

“I love my football and I love supporting the lads home and away,” she said.

“Even though ill health has meant I can’t help out as much as I used to, I will always lend a hand where needed without question.”

Kath has spent many hours painting around the ground when she was younger, working the pie hut and social club as well as washing the kit.

But despite recent ill health this has not stopped her making sandwiches, replacing broken printers and more importantly, attending matches both home and away.

Harry Hulmes, Director at Mossley, said: “After having a second stroke earlier this season, her number one aim was to get back to watching her beloved Lilywhites.  Amazingly, she did this within five weeks!

“With Elaine, she presents an annual award, in memory of husband  Brian for the club’s best supporter at the end of season awards evening.

“It is the club’s view that this award should actually go to her!”

Kath, who is also a life member of the club after she received the honour from ex Man City legend Mike Summerbee last year, will be invited to the final in Barnsley this April if she makes the shortlist of the final five.

The finalists will enjoy a courtesy overnight stay at the Four Star Brooklands Holiday Inn with the winner announced on the night alongside the Evo-Stik NPL’s top players.

The Evo-Stik NPL Operations Manager Alan Allcock said: “Nominations will be considered on merit so we end up with a very special supporter winning the inaugural award.

“We have some amazing fans and unsung heroes involved in the league and this is a fantastic opportunity to see them recognised and honoured.”
