It’s D-Day for multi-storey

Hyde’s multi-storey car park is likely to demolished in a matter of weeks.

Contractors have given a February 1 start date, with the cleared site near Clarendon Square, set to eventually becoming Tameside’s latest KFC outlet.

The demolition is likely to take about 16 weeks.

At Monday’s Hyde and Longdendale District Assembly questions were asked about whether the structure could be saved.

One man said: “Could you have done it up so it could carry on for a few more years?”

But Cllr Peter Robinson said the cost of refurbishing the car park would have been prohibitive.

He said KFC had approached the council with an offer with the money received exceeding the cost of demolition.

“It would have had to come down in a few years anyway,” Cllr Robinson said.

The KFC venture is expected to create more than 40 jobs, as previously reported.
