Celtic 4 Witton Albion 4

Celtic win 5-3 on penalties

Cheshire Senior Cup, first round

After reaching the final in the last two seasons, Celtic progressed through to the next round of the Cheshire Senior Cup.

The hardy souls who braved the wind and rain at Bower Fold were certainly given their money’s worth.

Adam Pepper started the proceedings on five minutes, and surely sealed Celtic’s goal of the season competition at the same time.

He hit a sublime lob from all of 45 yards which sailed over Plant in the Witton goal.

Witton were back in the game 10 minutes later when Thompson turned on a sixpence before slotting home into the bottom corner.

The visitors were unlucky to go in level at the break after carving out a few great chances. Celtic took advantage of Witton’s wasteful play, and Buckley put Celtic 2-1 up on 46 after beating the offside trap and finishing calmly.

Thompson then equalised for the visitors after out-pacing Smith and firing past Cookson.

Celtic fell behind to a brilliant goal by Bakkor. After cutting in from the left the Witton man curled a shot into the top right hand corner. The goal looked to have won the game for the visitors. That was until substitute Paul Ennis fired in to make it 3-3 in injury-time to send the game into extra-time.

Celtic’s Ennis and McConville were starting to click and Celtic made it 4-3 on 99 minutes when McConville latched onto a ball down the right before outpacing the Witton defender and dinking the ball over the on rushing Plant.

The game seemed to be petering out until the 120th minute when Bakkor popped up to make it 4-4 and sent the game into penalties.

Jack Cookson made one fine save and Celtic scored all five of their penalties to seal the game. Celtic host Altrincham or Stockport Sports in the next round.
