Jessie 100 Jessie Hague-08

There’s no place like home for Jessie Hague.

And the great-great-grandmother was able to celebrate the grand milestone of her 100th birthday just how she likes it – still living in the Denton family house that has been her home for the past 63 years.

Jessie, a widow, lives alone but is supported by daily visits from her daughter-in-law, Doreen Hague, personal carers and – crucially – the 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, peace of mind of Tameside Council’s Community Response Team.

The Community Response Service provides her with a pendant alarm and other monitors, such as smoke alarms, to help ensure she is safe and able to call on them for help at any time.

Jessie is just one of over 4,500 Tameside residents being supported by the team so that they may continue to live independently in their own homes.

She said: “I’m very happy living here and don’t want to be anywhere else.

“Doreen and the wardens are wonderful – they really look after me and I don’t know what I would do without them.”

Doreen said: “It’s really reassuring for me to know that Jessie has the around-the-clock care of the Community Response Team. The wardens are brilliant – she is always pressing her alarm for all sorts of reasons but they are always happy to help.”

Community Response Warden Susan Laurent, who regularly attends to Jessie, said: “Our clients are real people to us, we get to know them really well and all their little ways.

“Jessie is a real character – she still reads the newspaper every day and watches TV. We are not just there if they have a fall – their emergency, however small, is our emergency and will do everything we can to help.”

Tameside Council Executive Member for Adult Social care and Wellbeing Cllr Brenda Warrington said: “We know people want to stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible and Jessie – who is a real inspiration – is a great example of how we can work with families to achieve this. It is also heartening to see first-hand how our staff go that extra mile to ensure people are safe, comfortable and cared for.

The Community Response Service is available to anyone who lives in Tameside, regardless of their personal circumstances and costs from as little as £5.69 a week.
