A fabulous finale has been planned for Ashton’s Christmas Market with a packed programme of entertainment and the return of the helter-skelter!

The two-week event, which runs until 5pm this Sunday, has been a resounding success with thousands of visitors going along to enjoy the celebrations and atmosphere.

There’s still time for people to visit the festive fair – which includes 30 traditional cabin stalls selling a variety of gifts and delicious food, as well daily live entertainment.

Among the fantastic acts due to perform this weekend are Ashton Brass Band, River City Jazz Band, Bloco Mente Samba Band and the Take On Take That tribute act.

There are also free rides on the Victorian carousel today (Thursday) while the helter skelter – which was in place for the opening celebrations – will be back and also offering free rides.

Free parking is available from 10am to midnight throughout December in Wimpole Street (Penny Meadow), Crown Street, Mill Lane and Union Street car parks in Ashton.

The market is also conveniently located for public transport links including the Metrolink.

Some of the enticing goods on offer at the Christmas Market include mulled wine, speciality hot chocolate, pancakes, chocolate fountain, cupcakes, gourmet burgers, pulled pork, aromatherapy candles, jewellery, personalised ceramics and handmade crafts.

The market is now weekdays from 11am to 8.30pm, Saturday 10am to 9.30pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm.

Tameside Council deputy executive leader Cllr John Taylor, who is responsible for markets, said: “We’ve received lots of wonderful feedback from people who have enjoyed the market and the festive atmosphere.

“I would like to thank everyone for showing their support and shopping local – if you’ve not yet visited the market then there’s still time to come along and enjoy everything it has to offer. Let’s make this spectacular Tameside event a success for now and for years to come!”
